Vestal Virgins For Life: Catholic Consecrated Virgins
Woman is first consecrated virgin in the diocese of Fresno.
", California –
Victoria Selkirk on Sunday became the first person within the Diocese of Fresno to join a special order within the Roman Catholic Church for people who promise to live a life of chastity.
Those within the Order of Virgins continue to live “in the world” and do not reside in convents, like nuns. It’s estimated there are fewer than 300 in the United States, and between 5,000 and 6,000 worldwide.
Selkirk, 36, of Lemoore, California, will continue to work as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, serving as a registered dietitian.
Bishop Armando Ochoa administered a special ceremony during the Sunday morning Mass at St. John’s Cathedral in Fresno, praying over Selkirk, who wore a long white wedding gown. Ochoa said she “awaits Christ, the bridegroom.”
Selkirk has had lots of friends try to play matchmaker over the years, but her heart was totally settled on Jesus Christ.
“One of my friends’ first questions was, ‘But what happens if you meet someone?’ ” Selkirk recalled earlier. “I said, ‘I’ve already met him, and he’s mine.’ ”
I knew about this before but never posted on it. It's blasphemy when they claim to be "brides" of Jesus Christ. The false Catholic church will mislead them. Regular nuns wear wedding gowns when taking their vows as well. It seems this would be a ceremony for women who do not intend to ever marry to feel more "special".
Sadly some are probably well-meaning women who want to serve and help the poor or focus their life on "single" pursuits. There are people out there, who are not meant to ever marry and I believe they have a role to serve in this world, but this ceremony and "consecrated virgins" is not the way to go about it. There's many people who live and die as virgins and do not enter a romantic or sexual relationship for their entire life. Even the bible speaks of those who stay single to serve:
1 Corinthians 7 For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.
8 I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, it is good for them if they abide even as I.
9 But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.
