Vestal Virgins For Life: Catholic Consecrated Virgins

Woman is first consecrated virgin in the diocese of Fresno.

", California –
Victoria Selkirk on Sunday became the first person within the Diocese of Fresno to join a special order within the Roman Catholic Church for people who promise to live a life of chastity.
Those within the Order of Virgins continue to live “in the world” and do not reside in convents, like nuns. It’s estimated there are fewer than 300 in the United States, and between 5,000 and 6,000 worldwide.
Selkirk, 36, of Lemoore, California, will continue to work as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, serving as a registered dietitian.
Bishop Armando Ochoa administered a special ceremony during the Sunday morning Mass at St. John’s Cathedral in Fresno, praying over Selkirk, who wore a long white wedding gown. Ochoa said she “awaits Christ, the bridegroom.”
Selkirk has had lots of friends try to play matchmaker over the years, but her heart was totally settled on Jesus Christ.
“One of my friends’ first questions was, ‘But what happens if you meet someone?’ ” Selkirk recalled earlier. “I said, ‘I’ve already met him, and he’s mine.’

I knew about this before but never posted on it. It's blasphemy when they claim to be "brides" of Jesus Christ. The false Catholic church will mislead them. Regular nuns wear wedding gowns when taking their vows as well.  It seems this would be a ceremony for women who do not intend to ever marry to feel more "special".

Sadly some are probably well-meaning women who want to serve and help the poor or focus their life on "single" pursuits. There are people out there, who are not meant to ever marry and I believe they have a role to serve in this world, but this ceremony and "consecrated virgins" is not the way to go about it. There's many people who live and die as virgins and do not enter a romantic or sexual relationship for their entire life.  Even the bible speaks of those who stay single to serve:

1 Corinthians 7 For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.
I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, it is good for them if they abide even as I.
But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.

It seems the catholic church makes a big deal about virginity all the while hiding other perverted sexual sins from the masses. No wonder Jesus called out the religious of His day, "You hypocrites, you brood of vipers!"

Such a show the religious of Jesus' day made, and such a show we make of the outside of the religious cups today. Nothing new under the sun, nothing new.

I agree it's such a hypocritical show in the face of the rest of the evil going on in that church. Lauding virginity to it's heights while allowing children to be abused and then protecting the abusers. Yes it is definitely a brood of vipers. I feel for the women handing themselves over like that told making "martyrs" of themselves for a false religious system.

This whole blog is laughable. You clearly have no idea of the earliest history of Christ's Church; rather, just perpetuate the platitudes your heretic Protestant leaders feed you. Prayers will be spoken for all the heretics and millions of false Churches created and resulting from the Schism.

I grew up Catholic and went to Catholic school and learned the "history" of the Roman Catholic church. I am not a Protestant. It does not matter if Rome sees me as a "heretic" being a Christian and saved in Jesus Christ is what matters. Salvation does not come from church membership.

I too grew up Catholic, and learned the "history". I know more now of truth than I ever did in the first 27 years of my life. You've been fed a line and you will not see it until it is too late, unless you repent. I have family in that same boat, and it grieves my heart, they rely on a system and traditions of men instead of Jesus. Romans 3:4 "God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar;". That system will not get you to heaven, no system does. Jesus said a man must be born agin of the Spirit. John 3:3-6: "Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I saw unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." Jesus never said "go baptize your babies so they can go to heaven one day." Find confirmation in the Bible for me. Find last rites. Find purgatory. All you can refer to is your extra Biblical book of the Maccabees, in reference to a bunch of idolatrous Jews who had come out of paganry and had maintained the Babylonian prayers for the dead they learned in captivity.

Continued:
Bible-believing Christians have been present since Acts. There have always been groups that withstood Rome. ALWAYS. After Constantine paganized the church in the 300s, as it remains to it's present day, the true saints of the Lord Jesus Christ were butchered by the millions for not participating in the Romish churches heresy. They were of course persecuted before that, but by outward pagans, then by the "religious crowd" who remained pagan at heart but only slightly Christianized. John 16:2: "They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service." Those blessed saints refused to participate because they saw it for what it was. Their babies were drowned by sadistic priests because parents refused infant baptism, and were mocked as their little ones were murdered. People were buried alive, beheaded, burned at the stake. All for skipping out on the Mass, or heaven forbid owning a Bible. Men like William Tyndale were burned at the stake, with the English Bibles that they translated stacked around them as tinder. They sang hymns as they burned. I know that someday I will see them in heaven, and I cannot wait.

I too am not a Protestant. You cannot reform utter corruption and decay and death. Repent, and be saved by the blood of Jesus Christ and not your own stinking works. The Bible says that all our works are as filthy rags. Those rags mentioned were used to wipe pus from leprosy, that is what God thinks of our works. Mine too. I am pathetic outside Him, I am nothing. I will pray for you, although I do not know your name, although I have no doubt that you will be enraged and mock me for this. That is fine.

Baptism won't save you, confirmation won't save you, your Queen of Heaven can't save you (go read Jeremiah 44:19-22 and get back to me on what God thinks of the Queen of Heaven), your Pope surely can't save you, he can't even save himself. How wicked he is, claiming to be Christ on Earth. Some day he will meet my Lord, and I tremble for him. Only the blood of Jesus can save you. I may sound terribly harsh to others reading this, and I'm only writing what I'm led to do. I am so grateful the Lord Jesus preserved me while I was in this system that I did not get so mired down in it I could not see my way out. God bless you, and I'm praying for you.

By the way, my name is Heather. Just know that Heather is praying for you, that Scripture will prick your heart, and convict you to know that you are in deadly dangerous error, and you will repent and be saved.

Romans 10:13 "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." Call on Him now, before it is too late for you.

Hello Anonymous 6:43,

Please laugh, but remember, our LORD and Savior, Jesus, the Christ was not a catholic nor a protestant. Those are labels pinned to Jesus' hem for the sake of man's false theologies. And the early Ekklesia, called out ones who followed Christ, were not catholic in any way, shape, or form. Where in Jesus' Holy Name does this false teaching come from! God forbid! The name "Protestant" actually came from the wicked hearts and minds of the catholic leaders back in the day when people were being saved by Jesus and leaving the catholic religious system. These saved souls were labeled "protestors, thus the word "Protestant" official "name calling of their day."

Believe is or not anonymous, souls are saved outside of the "catholic church system." Jesus is the only One who saves, and He knows who are his.....He is never fooled by the games men and women play. Praise our LORD for His Sovereignty.

Thank-you for the Scriptural reminder Anonymous; "and commanding to abstain from meats." This also can be applied to the Hebrews Roots movement where these Assembly of God women are telling me that we are still NOT supposed to eat pork. These homeschooling mothers have their children pick the pepperoni off of their pizzas when they are in mixed company having no control over the ordering process. Catholicism, Hebrew Roots, or whatever the organization, works salvation will never earn a soul's way into heaven, for we have bypassed the finished work of Jesus, the Christ, sacrifice on the cross for us.

Recently, a catholic woman visited my home. She is very active in her local 501c.3 and is a delightful individual to share company with, however, she is very paranoid about not doing enough for 'the c'hurch' in order to earn her way into heaven. The next time she comes into my home, the LORD willing, I pray that He will give me the courage by the power of the Holy Spirit, to share the true Gospel in setting her free!

The bride of christ is the church, and he loves his bride and therefore died on the cross to save his bride from sin giving us eternal life. All those who are against the church and supposely follow jesus are committing a mistake. How can you follow jesus and talk bad about the church, his bride,if you are with jesus you will respect the church.Yes, the church is not perfect theres been many terrible actions committed by the church but no church is perfect. We are sinners and thats why jesus is full of mercy towards the sinners. The bible also mentions dont judege others but look at your own sins.Stop talking about the church and its imperfections and look at your selfs who are full of sins just like everyone else. When the second coming of christ comes he will judge us and give us what we deserve,so stop gossiping and talking bad about the church. Those who in the catholic church have done severe offenses will be punish by God thats not our problem.Just focus on your life and on the commandment jesus left us: love one another as i have love.Love the church and everyone there and stop condemming others because thats jesus job.
For those who may not know, there are many accounts of saints such as st philomena who was 13 who consagrated her virginity towards jesus.Theres proof the virgin and jesus appear to her while she was being tortured and told her her torment was almost over and soon she would see her spouse jesus christ in heaven. The same jesus told her that.So who are we to decide if a virgin consagrated can be the bride of christ?
We are all the brides of jesus as we belong to the church and we follow him.
Virginity is important because it shows purity and innocense. In this corrupt world many can not live without sex
now and only those who god chooses with the holy ghost are able to be virgins their whole life and resist sex. I dont think many of you would be able to live a life free of sex.
Many of us say we believe in jesus and follow him, but our actions say the contrary. If you are a true desiciple of jesus you will do as he says and will love your neighboor as jesus loves us.

Anonymous said...

As I posted my comment earlier today, you should read it.It begins with the bride of christ...
You are in a terrible error brother and makes me feel bad for your soul. Jesus has apeared in our modern time to those who he chooses as he did after the resurection to his disiciples. In many of these appearances, he has told this generation of sinners that we must accept him as our savior and pray for those who reject him.He has also mentions many times, although you probably wont believe me but research yourself, that he has choosen an immaculate heart to help us in our life and that immaculate heart is mary his mother.he clearly mentions and repeats many times that we must accept his mother mary in order to accept him and those who arw rwjecting her are rejecting him.His mother the virgin mary is there to help us as an intercesor not a god. We ask her for advice and she asks god and jesus if they can give us the health we need.A son can not deny anything to his mother. Now you tell me anoynmous when you where small you may have had a deeper relationship with your mother or fatheri do not know.lets say you were closer to your mother and you wanted to ask your father for permission to go some where or to buy something. You would ask your mom if she could tell your father you wanted to go ouy with friwnds if he would let you.Your mom would go to your father and ask him and convince him to let you go. Your father later came and told you you could go.Thats the same with the virgin mary.We are the people who ask her and she goes to the all powerful god.She does not do it herself she is gods servant the choosen one, but many people do not understand this.We workship god and love him but mary is there to help us.God is our savior but mary our mother who cares for all even those who reject her like you do. Remember, your are rejecting her but also rejecting jesus christ who will judge you in his second coming.Your soul has been warned, its up to you to decide.
I will keep you in my prayers and ask my mother mary to care for you and help you out even though you and many others do not accept her.
Good day

BB,

After reading about these Roman Catholic women that go into nunnery with every good intention to only find they are in a reality that is not of God, but vows to men.

This is how over many years the Conservative Mennonites have made single women "nuns" so to speak, "forbidding to marry" outside their denomination. This smacks of Jesuitical popery to me, yet unknowing to these poor young women that might want to get married in this denomination they are "vowed" to their denomination by this trickery.

They take away any liberty in Christ Jesus, to hold them in bondage to men.

Catholic anon, I will pray for you. I do not believe the Catholic church is God's church. I am ex-Catholic and have definitely made my views known about Catholicism on this blog but what matters is what God says about Catholicism. The Bible warns of a false religious system in the last days. Given that your Popes are uniting around a one world religion, that is a giant red flag. I will pray you are born again and God opens your eyes about the Catholic church.

Bible Believer said...

Yes it is vows to men, deb.

the Bible forbids "forbidding to marry", so right there, these vows to be a life-long virgin and more are against scripture. I did not know conservative Mennonite women had to marry within, probably this is like the Amish but on a less advanced scale.

KJVmom said...

Just for the record, conservative Mennonite girls and the young men as well are encouraged to marry someone from a similar group, which certainly doesn't have to be a carbon copy of the other. Ultimately everyone has free will to choose. Amos 3:3 "Can two walk together, except they be agreed?" Conservative Mennonites do emphasize the biblical doctrines of holiness and separation as one lives for Jesus after repentance and taking Jesus as Lord and Savior. Like everyone else, they are not perfect, but most truly have a heart for the Lord and wish to see the lost saved and want to bear fruit.

I think it is you who needs to reread my comments. I have given you plain Scripture and you have rejected it.

Can you take me to the infallible Word of God, His King James Bible, and show me where it uses the words "immaculate heart"? Do you realize that some/many of those dogmas were invented by popes, even as recent as the last century? I can show you a verse that says we are to pray to no one but The Lord Jesus Christ: 1 Timothy 2:3: "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;".

If things that apparitions say do not line up with God's Word, they are false. I know that "Marian apparitions" lay claim that Mary will crush the serpent and bring about peace and unity. Peace and unity will come some day, probably real soon from the looks of it, but it will be an antichrist system. Only true peace comes through Jesus.

And the Bible is clear on just who crushes the serpent. Genesis 3:15: "And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel." Notice it refers to the seed of the woman not the woman.

In case you didn't read my first post, please reread it. I know well first hand, as an ex Catholic how much pride there is around being "the one true church". The Bible is full of warnings about pride. Pride blinds to the truth.

Take care. I continue to pray for you directly to The Lord Jesus Christ. I am always thankful for His once and for all sacrifice, and that He saved me from eternal hell.

The bible never warns about a specific religion it doesnt say the catholic regilion. You are making assumptions and thats not how the bible should be read. When you read the bible you shouldnt assume thats what its trying to say because most ideally thats not the mesage. Most times the devil tries to blind us and make us misunderstand the bible so we believe something completlt opposite of what the lord is saying. So be careful when you read it. The catholic church follows the teachings of jesus while buddism, the muslim religion and indian religion do not follow jesus and have complete different gods. Those religions may be the ones the bible refers towards. As jesus said in the bible when his disciples approach and told him some men where doing miracles under his name and jesus replied if they are doing this under my name then they are not against me and cause no harm let them continue. The protestant, evangelicals and catholics are following jesus using him as their god and therefore they cant be against him or jesus against them. But the muslims and indians have totally diffrrent gods and believes.Do more reasearch and allow your hearr to be open to more perspectives dont be blinded by the devil as he wants to make you go against your brothers in other religions he wants to take peace away from you and create war. Dont worry about the catholics if their teachings are wrong god will take care of them when he judges them.Your jod is to love everyone as your brothers no matter what as jesus said love one another and dont worry about the catholics or talk about them because god will take care of them.

You are hard hearted and blinded by the devil. He has blinded you so you are not truly saved from eternal hail.Jesus said those who reject my mother are denying me so basically you are not following jesus because of this and when the time comes he will judge you and decide about your eternal life.I will keep praying so your soul reacts soon and you actually see the truth a.d are not blinded by the devil anymore before its too late.My mission here is to save as many souls from the devil as possible and am here for your salvation. But you have believed the lies told by the people who have been i.fluenced by the devil.the devil wants war argument and not love as jesus told us to love one another and you are not loving or respecting your brothers in other religions so you are not doi.g what jesus said and you are not following jesus .jesus wants us to be clean from our hearts and you need to do that.to answer your comment, there will only be peace on earth when the second coming of christ is here thats when peace will arrive.in the bible in revelations theres a part that mentions how there is awomen about to give birth with a dragon behind her trying to eat her child when hes born.thats mary and jesus and then her stepping on the serpant once jesus comes and destroys the devil.we didnt make this up its in the bible.but peace will only come when the devil has been destroyed by jesus.the catholic chruch has not have pride believeing its the one church i have no idea as an ex catholic where you attended, yes your right pride is bad and talked about in the bible but you have pride in your own religion too.you continue to insult the catholic religion and others and have talked bad about your brothers in those rligious.you have pride too thinking you wil be saved from eternal hell when only god knows who will.the bible mentions only a reay small number or souls will make it into heaven.jesus mentions worthy those who believe without seeing. Those who believe in jesus and mary without actually sseing them will be worthy of jesus when they died as they have believed in them without actually seeing them and those who dont believe in them will have wished they would have taken seriously the warnings from god through others so their souls could be next to him in heaven.many have been warned but only a few have responded.its up to you to decide if you want to continue to be blinded by the devil or not.i will pray specially for your soul. If you had a bad experience in the past in the catholic church thats not an excuse to deny juseus and his mother they are not at fault. Just research about mary and jesus in a not biased way and alot of info will appear.look up gladys de motta messajes as jesus told her some serious messajes to her to inform humanity. May jesus, mary and god have mercy on your poor confuse soul and send you to eternal life some day my brother.

You the anoynmous talking about mary yes you are right! I did reasearch and you are right i was blinded by the devil!my mother sweet mary loves us so much. I didnt believe in her and the catholic church and i asked her to appear to me if she existed and she did.i know many will not believe me but its true. A lot of light appear and then she appeared on a cloud with a pink veil and white cloak with a crown and baby jesus on her arms. She has black hair and looks young about 17 years.shes light skinned and has brown eyes. She didnt talk to me but she looked at me and smiled. Now i believe in her thanks to you anoymous.everyone this is true although many will accuse me of being crazy i know what i saw. Some will believe me and others will not but thats them.

If you really read the bible and loved jesus and followed him you wouldnt be hating each other.you hate others who are not in the same religion as you and call them wrong and made this blog to talk bad about them because you dont agree with them.would jesus do that?would he talk bad about the samaritans or others? No, on the contrary he went up to the samaritan woman and talked to her. As a jew he was not supposed to talk to a samaritan but he did. This shows us that we shouldnt talk about others or hate them but we have to respect them and love them and talk to them like jesus did to the samaritan woman. He showed us we should love others regardless of their religion, race or beliefs. You need to take some time and meditate this with jesus. Also in the first testament when paul was persecuting the church and trying to kill and get all christians he was blinded and then was allowed to see and he said thathe shouldnt have been persecuting the church and he became a christian.you are persecuting the church and hurting those who believe in jesus you too have been blinded, you need to have a deep and ssincee talk to jesus and he will guide you on what to do next. Stop persecuting and hating other religious not just the catholic church.
Shall pray for your future.

BB,In regards to the making promises not to marry: “Those who first went away from society, and lived alone, did it from good motives. They wished to avoid persecution and live in peace. But when people devoted themselves to this life without necessity, promising not to marry, they did wrong. When they began to be esteemed better than others, a kind of merit was attached to their way of living. This was losing sight of the grand principle of the Gospel, which teaches us to expect salvation only on account of the merits of Christ. There can be no merit in anything we do.”

“Another mark of the apostasy is, Forbidding to marry.” Saturninus, in the second century, declared matrimony to be the doctrine of the devil, and exhorted men no to eat meat. Tatian, who had been a disciple of Justin Martyr, also preached the same thing. The Marcionists taught that marriage was unlawful, and for this reason were called the Continents. The Gnostics, and other heretics of the third century, taught the same thing.~ Harvey Newcomb ~ The Great Apostasy, 1833.

Thank you for the venue to expose the unscriptural practices of those that deny others their liberty in Christ to marry, but instead they live a life of loneliness and it shows in their faces. deb.

To add to the words of the Catholic anon above, interesting how you all side-stepped the concept of virginity, as JESUS AND PAUL both indicate as a HIGHER form of life. READ YOUR BIBLE, Evangelical stone-throwers. Start with John 17 on Jesus' call to UNITY (never once have I heard the Catholic Church slam Evangelicals, however it's unrelenting mud-slinging in the other direction. TRULY, by their fruits, ye shall know them. If the world hates you, know it hated Me first). Second, flip that Bible open to Matthew 19 and review what Jesus said about eunuchs called to such for the Kingdom's sake. You people are either cherry-pickers or just genuinely have zero knowledge of Scripture. Catholicism NEVER forbade marriage; in fact, it elevates the holiness of marriage to a Sacrament! However, Jesus calls some to a special calling most closely replicating how He Himself lived His life...in perpetual celibacy/virginity for Kingdom's sake (Matthew 19). Not all can receive it, BUT HE WHO CAN, SHOULD!! Next, flip to 1 Corinthians 7. Did you people completely disregard what Paul spoke explicitly clearly on virginity and an undivided focus of the virgin? The married man is concerned about his wife (as he should be!), but the virgin is able to give herself completely to God, with an undivided heart and love. Again, not all are called to this....but some are, and they should seek this as the Higher call for their lives. Most are called to marriage. We are all different portions of the same Body, so stop trying to cut off your own hands, people. This blog has been the most powerful witness to the Truth of the Catholic faith, that I have come across.

Anonymous said...

1 Corinthians 7 and Matthew 19. READ THEM, Evangelicals. Stop the cherry-picking, and answer the questions the Catholic anon posted above, regarding virginity and celibacy. Jesus and Paul BOTH are clear on the Higher call to virginity/celibacy, for (s)he who has been called to it (and only a few are called to it, but it's MORE than appropriate for the special people God beckons to Him, in this way)...Jesus makes a point of saying to let them receive it. And re: forbidding marriage? WHAT? Nobody ever forbade marriage in the Catholic Church; in fact, it's elevated to a Sacrament. What on earth are you Evangelicals talking about? God have mercy on you for your heretical ways.

Bible Believer said...

Thank you deb, I feel for the woman in the video, you can see her loneliness and sadness, she is seeking to find some misguided dignity via her consecrated virgin status.

What of 1 Timothy 3?

1 Timothy 4King James Version (KJV)

4 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

Your priests and nuns are forbidden to marry.

The ritualized celibacy in Rome is not what the bible teaches.

Anonymous said...

LOL to the above. You obviously didn't watch the video, especially the last portion where she talks about her joy and anticipation (unmute/turn on your volume). And you can continuously try to avoid answering my questions as to how to explain what Jesus Christ and Paul themselves explicitly said in Scripture about virginity and celibacy. It just makes you look like the Side-stepping prevaricating lost soul you are. I will pray earnestly for your salvation, and that you abandon your heretical ways.

Bible Believer said...

Sometimes body language and what's in the eyes speak louder then words. I had a time in my life where I thought I would never marry. Many young women are oppressed in our society if they are not coupled up by a certain age. No let me make that many young people. In fact I believe that this world be a better place if it was accepted that not all are called to marriage. So I believe what Jesus Christ and Paul taught about celibacy and virginity. But that said, I do not agree with Catholic theology and the ritualization of celibate clergy which got your church in some very hot water with the pedophilia scandals which really were most post pubscent males via homosexual priests. I supposed according to Rome I am a "heretic". I will pray for you and that you are saved and God one day shows you the truth about the Roman Catholic system.

Ma'am, I would like Scripture for where Jesus said that about rejecting Mary. I would like to know your source. I sure don't hate you, but you just spewed a whole lot of venom my way. Just as it's been down through history. I have been asking for Scriptural references and you won't give them to me. Anyhow, this is my last comment. It's pointless to continue. Please repent of your idolatry, and be saved. Oh, and by the way...Jesus was a full grown man, 33 years old when he died and rose again. That is Roman Catholic art, not reality. My Jesus does need to be subservient to anyone, he is The Lord of Lords. He is not an infant. That infant is Tammuz, Horus, the son of the Queen of Heaven of the Bible. But that is not my Jesus.

Bible Believer said...

How on earth are you still in the Catholic church when they celebrate the infant Jesus?

"Evangelical" is kind of one of those nebulous words. Am I one? Well I certainly am not on par with the National Evangelical Association. As for being a Baptist, I did a post on that long ago but I have parted ways from the IFB. I guess right now I'm just saying Christian but I know there are some saved Baptists out there who are not joined with the World Baptist Alliance and their ilk.

BB, we should never call ourselves Baptists, Presbyterians, Covenant or or any other man-made doctrinal organization. We are Christians because we believe in the death, burial and resurrection of Christ Jesus, plain and simple. We may attend a Baptist church, but to be baptized into that church is false doctrine and a unbiblical and man-made ceremonies that pollute the Word of God. When asked, I politely say, I am a Christian! If prodded more, which actually made one man upset with me, I just tell them that I am not a member of any organization, but I am a member of Christ's church. I don't think that is rude or boastful.

"I knew about this before but never posted on it. It's blasphemy when they claim to be "brides" of Jesus Christ. The false Catholic church will mislead them.”

"Then she receives the veil and ring, by which they say she is married to Christ. Such are the blasphemies of Popery. But this ceremony alone is wonderfully calculated to work upon the romantic feelings of young girls. The idea of being the spouse of Christ, and living a life of angelic purity, free from the influence of the world, acts as a charm to entice them to take the veil. But, when once taken, they learn the sad reality of their case. They still find themselves subject to the passions and feelings of human nature.”

Origins of Vestal virgins:
"In Pagan Rome, this fire-worship and serpent- worship were sometimes separate, sometimes conjoined; but both occupied a pre-eminent place in Roman esteem. The fire of Vesta was regarded as one of the grand safeguards of the empire. It was pretended to have been brought from Troy by Aeneas, who had it confided to his care by the shade of Hector, and was kept with the most jealous care by the Vestal virgins, who, for their charge of it, were honoured with the highest honours. ~ The Two Babylons , by Alexander Hislop, page 187.

"Enforced celibacy, which lies at the foundation of the monastic system, is of the very essence of the Apostacy, which is divinely characterised as the "Mystery of Iniquity." Let such Protestants read 1 Timothy 4:1-3, and surely they will never speak more of the abominations of the monasteries as coming only from their "decrepitude”!” ~ The Two Babylons , by Alexander Hislop, page 177.

Contempt for Marriage

"Now, while Semiramis, the real original of the Chaldean Queen of Heaven, to whom the "unbloody sacrifice" of the mass was first offered, was in her own person, as we have already seen, the very paragon of impurity, she at the same time affected the greatest favour for that kind of sanctity which looks down with contempt on God's holy ordinance of marriage. The Mysteries over which she presided were scenes of the rankest pollution; and yet the higher orders of the priesthood were bound to a life of celibacy, as a life of peculiar and pre-eminent holiness." But for this the spiritual power of the Papacy might have been firmly established over all the nations of the West, long before the time it actually was so. It is clear, that immediately after Damasus, the Roman bishop, received his pontifical power, the predicted "apostacy" (1 Tim 4:3), so far as Rome was concerned, was broadly developed. Then were men "forbidden to marry," * and "commanded to abstain from meats."

* The celibacy of the clergy was enacted by Syricius, Bishop of Rome, AD 385. (GIESELER) Source: The Two Babylons by Alexander Hislop, page 202.
