Huckabee Wants Convicts Sold Into Slavery

Huckabee Suggests Poor People Should Be Sold Into Slavery For Stealing

[Not an endorsement of Think Progress but being shown for information]

"The former Arkansas governor weighed in on our nation’s current criminal justice system during an appearance yesterday on Mickelson in the Morning, a leading Iowa radio program.
Host Jan Mickelson began by bemoaning that the “criminal justice system has been taken over by progressives.” In order to fight back, he argued, conservatives should look to the biblical Book of Exodus. “It says, if a person steals, they have to pay it back two-fold, four-fold,” Mickelson explained. “If they don’t have anything, we’re supposed to take them down and sell them.”

Mickelson went on to argue why jails, which he claimed are a “pagan invention,” are inferior to slavery: “We indenture them and they have to spend their time not sitting on their stump in a jail cell, they’re supposed to be working off the debt.”

“Wouldn’t that be a better choice?” the host asked."

Ever notice those hard on crime types always harken back to the Old Testament? The days of grace don't apply to prisoners. Doesn't he realize many are already being made into "slaves" and many prisoners are working ALREADY in prisons for pennies on the dollars for megacorporations. Its sickening how these right wing types always push merciless oppression for everything. Stealing is wrong, and a sin but then some of these types in their lust for slaves and a hardened police state are just as sinful if not worse. I am sure rich Huckabee endorses putting those in debt in prison too.

In California they have prisoners fighting the massive wildfire situation for I think $2.00 a day plus 2 days off their sentence for each day they are actively fighting fire. They are the front line workers, digging fire-break trenches and clearing paths for equipment.

On the other hand, if I was a prisoner, I think I'd rather work than sit in a cell. But there is a lot of room for abuse and profit and injustice.

Thanks Joy, yes they are having them fight fires and they can get time off. Most prisons except 23 hour lock down Super-Max prisons, have work programs. Sadly the corporations are taking advantage as I have posted about before. I think some work programs and training are good but there are abuses.

In this case, one has to consider the source that is a bunch of wing nuts. I think this has been taken out of context to be fair to Huckabee. I am not into politics and I realize that he is "Christianity lite". But he does seem to be a decent man, better than most, humanly speaking of course. I realize he consorts with the NAR and is ecumenical. One can't be in politics without unholy alliances.

It often does prisoners good to be working rather than sitting in their cells. One state uses low risk prisoners to help clean up the roadways. They actually enjoy being out in the fresh air.

While they are incarcerated they can repay their debt to society in more ways than just being confined. This helps many of them in rehabilitation.

Too often prisoners are given too many privileges that makes prison life not that bad and even preferable to trying to live outside. They should always be treated humanely of course, but not any perks.

I saw Huckabee salute the devil's horn sign while Michael W. Smith was on his show who has rune letters on his CD and is known to be a satanist portraying himself to be a Christian.
