The Decline of Empathy

What is Empathy?

It is a given that it is declining in our society. Why are young people caring less and less about others?

This society is one that values hardness and lack of compassion. In fact as I have aged, the growing coldness of society is something I find harder and harder to cope with. While at times I am pleasantly surprised by nice people out in the world, we know something is changing far for the worse. My fellowship with Christians is some escape from it in this world, but many of you probably have seen this too....

1. Everything is about winning. Losers deserve to suffer is the whole message. Winning is the only thing that counts. Among the cold battling it out, everything is a competition, and other human beings are seen as people to "get over on" and to squash. Isn't that what Hunger Games was made to brainwash young people with? A kind of "kill" or be "killed" ethos? Toddlers used to be taught to "share" but the adults aren't providing much of an example. With these mentalities, the win at all costs messages kills compassion. It simply makes other human beings your competition. Winning in American society means "being hard" and giving no place to others, thusly far less empathy.

2. The standards of what makes a "good" person have been twisted. Character is out the door and everything is about bean counter standards of perfect cholesterol scores, fit bodies, high fashion, and being the best worker bee. I've written about the carrot on stick mentalities, but most are following those and judge those who have not accepted the rat race ethos as being deficient. Everyone wants to work on their own personal bucket list. Who cares about Empathy when you are busy crawling up the mountain and knocking the people you see as obstacles out of your way?

3. Everything is your fault! If something bad happens to you, contrary to the Bibles teaching that it rains on the just and unjust, lost people who have pushed such theological lies as KARMA, have taught the general populace that misfortune means you did something wrong. This can range from poverty even to severe illness like cancer. This of course goes along with the false positive thinking nonsense.  If people believe that those who have good things all deserve them and all the poor, sick, disabled, or other down and out people made "bad decisions", empathy is crushed under people who judge wrongly.

Being real in American society often means opening yourself up to some types who think they are superior to everyone else.

4. Softer emotions are disdained. I have noticed a huge increase in the growing superficiality in American culture as I have aged. No one wants to appear "weak". Tears are to be hidden.  Troubles to be shoved out the door and a false plastic face put on. One sad thing is that softer emotions are being ousted out the door as hearts growing harder. It is impossible for people to care about others in the right way and to show empathy if they are allowing their hearts to be frozen. It is impossible to care if no one knows anything that is really happening in the secret-keeping world among the non-empathetic.

Any vulnerabilities to some seem to be a "red flag" to go on the attack. One thing when you are around those who prey on "weakness", they remain strangers because they aren't going to be sharing their troubles or weak spots with you! Boring small talk predominates as everything is about how "perfect" someone is and how they have measured up.

5. Our communities are breaking up. Social disconnection is impacting empathy in a very negative fashion. Social life in America is dying. Even if you have friends, the extensive networks that used to bolster up life are disappearing. Too many conduct their social lives via the screen more then in the real world anymore especially in a world where everyone moves away.

Lack of empathy is how the right side of the New World Order got to play their games of giving more power to the bankers and elite in society. This is why they could name the poor or other groups as the "enemy" your average Republican confessing Christian could see as the "fault" of all that is wrong in this country instead of understanding how the wicked were cleaning out the tills. Instead of listening to Jesus Christ about love and compassion, they listen to politicians. Don't think I'm giving the left any excuses, their growing coldness and lack of empathy advanced abortion and many other evil things.

Empathy is being lost in this world. The Bible does not use the word EMPATHY but I believe COMPASSION is a close runner. It speaks of loving others too. What does it mean to be compassionate but to put yourself in another person's shoes? More and more in our narcissistic society this is becoming less and less.

I have to face my own times where I may lack of empathy and confront my own sins but I do worry, about the growing hardness out there. There's too many people who seem proud of their hardness. They want to crush those they see as "weaker". If I see someone acting like that, it does lead me to question where they are truly coming from. That is life for the children of the father of lies, not for the children of God.

1 Peter 3:8King James Version (KJV)
Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:

Do You Love Others: Do Not Let Your Love Wax Cold

Dear BB,

This week has been an eye opener.

jl did not realize how sick the church is. Churches in third world and persecuted countries do not behave like this.

jl is deeply grieved. I will be in prayer day and night over this.

The Bible says that in the latter times people would be without natural affection, and we are there. It makes me so sad to see how hard hearted we are towards our own children, even, and the lack of value that is placed on those who are considered weak or unprofitable. Warehousing kids, the disabled and the elderly people so we can go live our lives and have careers and be important is the cruelest sign of a lack of empathy, and we are going to reap the rewards of treating our aged and disabled with disrespect when our children look at us and treat us in the same way when we become aged and disabled. There is a complete disconnect in treating others the way we want to be treated, which would imply self sacrifice and kindness, because everyone is very clear on how they think they should be treated, but very few are willing to act accordingly!"T"

So right about "win at all costs" mentality" I see this in the sports world where the losers are berated by fans and especially in social media. With how I see things now, I would never be able to play football the way I did when I was younger. Even fans act like their world is crumbling when their teams lose. I took a personality test at my old job and was told by HR that I have low ambition all because I put answers that placed importance of family and friends, I told them guilty as charged lol! Investing in loved ones is a far better investment than investing in an unhealthy pursuit of career.

Before I was a stay at home, homeschooling mom, I was a supervisor. There was a man who reported to me who did excellent, consiencious work. He worked faster and harder than anyone else in my department. But I was always having to stand up for him to upper management because he turned down overtime. They hated that he was not a drone/slave, willing to put it unlimited hours. It didn't seem to matter to them that he got more done in eight hours than many did in twelve.

He was a Christian and was in the process of adopting several children of a family member that was on drugs and combining his own children with the new children. He worked hard, but his real job and ministry, was with these children.

Dear Saints,

jl remember the days of having a career too. jl does not miss those days because people are cruel now.

BB is right. The right have really villainized poor. Christians are the driving force of the right. It is tragic that they think they can prepare for everything. Doesn't Luke 12:20 warn about this mentality?

Kayabe is right. Social media gives an outlet for people to say cruel things without any consequences. They believe their anonymous moniker will keep them safe. However, it does not keep them safe from our Almighty God, whom they will have to give an account to.

Unknown, you are right in what you say. However, that group will NEVER believe it can happen to them. They always think they will have a plan B. jl spoke to an individual like this. He said abortion should be mandatory for poor people. jl further explained that what if that abortion would have been your future caregiver. This person said that would never happen. What sorry jl has for that individual.

Joy, you are also correct. Jobs want their employees to become drones and robots. jl had a former employer say that to succeed here, one must be a robot. THAT IS NOT GOD!

The evil comments from the "Vanishing Male Worker" showed me that being honest is like swimming in a pool filled with crocs. Christians need to realize that if they do not LEARN to have LOVE and COMPASSION, they will hear the words "Depart from me!" on the day of judgment.

This is serious, and a salvation issue. Unless those anon's repent, they will die in their sins.

Indeed, these are the last days fortold in scripture. This means that our redemption draweth nigh!

How can one "go to church" every Sunday, have a voting "membership" in the 501c. 3 institution, hold leadership positions such as "pastor, church board, elders, deacons, deaconesses, prayer chain "leader", ladies aid office holders, youth group leader, worship team leaders, etc.,

and still exhibit no compassion nor empathy for the hurting within the buildings made with human hands, and especially those who are lost and going to hell without Jesus in their lives?

I have yet to experience true sorrow, true tears, and true brokenness for the lost in ANY 501c. 3 church system. NO SORROW FOR THE LOST.

And yet, outside of orchestrated religion, there is such hope, for God, the Holy Spirit, is still moving within the hearts and minds of His people! The veil within the visible temple has been torn and Jesus has come to set His people free....for there is compassion, love, and empathy found MORE in spirit led unchurched than exists in 501c. 3 attendees.

A cruel taskmaster is the visible American church system.

Alan Means, do not gaslight me for the sake of the false gospel and teachings you espouse. I will not post your comments insulting me. I do not have to accept cults trying to co-opt this blog. I liked Lena and was heart broken to find out she was in a cult.

Empathy is outdated.

My generation is just smarter.

And herein lies the problem with autism spectrum disorders..people with it may feel empathy, but they do not express it in ways that others need for them to express it in. So, in my opinion, if you keep empathy to yourself, you lack the ability to empathize with others. I think that this is the greatest tragedy of autism= the lack of ability or in some cases (with higher functioning group) refusal to be empathetic. That is why autism in my opinion is not of God, and it is not just a "different way of thinking", but rather a disordered way of thinking. Only God can address this condition and help people with it.

It's not 'YOUNG PEOPLE'. It's OUR generation. We are so spoiled and so ignorant compared to milleneals, that we are no longer able to see them as intelligent; just 'weird' and possibly evil.
